Bangladesh Ordnance Factories will start making bullet proof vests
Bangladesh Ordnance Factories (BOF) has released its extensive plans to make bulletproof vests of various levels of protection in Bangladesh for the first time as part of its expanding product line with the aim of meeting the requirement of the Bangladesh armed forces, law enforcement and export clients.
A tender released on 16 March, 2014 by BOF states has invited bona-fide manufacturers, local agents, importers and suppliers enlisted with BOF, DGDP and any other defence organisation to establish an assembly plant for bulletproof vests of Level-IIIA, Level III and Level IV. The tender is opened on 18 March 2014.
It may be mentioned that BMTF remains the only other maker of bulletproof jackets in Bangladesh using ceramic plate-based tiles supplied by MKU of India
As bulletproof vests offer various levels of protection. These protection levels were classified by the United States National Institute of Justice (NIJ)
Type IIIA
(.357 SIG; .44 Magnum) New armor protects against 8.1 g (125 gr) .357 SIG FMJ Flat Nose (FN) bullets at a velocity of 448 m/s ± 9.1 m/s (1470 ft/s ± 30 ft/s) and 15.6 g (240 gr) .44 Magnum Semi Jacketed Hollow Point (SJHP) bullets at a velocity of 436 m/s (1430 ft/s ± 30 ft/s). Conditioned armor protects against 8.1 g (125 gr) .357 SIG FMJ Flat Nose (FN) bullets at a velocity of 430 m/s ± 9.1 m/s (1410 ft/s ± 30 ft/s) and 15.6 g (240 gr) .44 Magnum Semi Jacketed Hollow Point (SJHP) bullets at a velocity of 408 m/s ± 9.1 m/s (1340 ft/s ± 30 ft/s). It also provides protection against most handgun threats, as well as the threats mentioned in [Types I, IIA, and II].
