The President Guard Regiment (PGR) is a Bangladeshi security force and intelligence outfit. The regiment was created by the then Deputy Chief Martial Law Administrator turned president elect Major General Ziaur Rahman in 1976. Back then it was known as Presidential Security Force. The force was restructured and upgraded to full regimental status by CMLA turned President Lt Gen Hussain Muhammad Ershad in 1982 and the new name President Guard Regiment was established.

History

Restructured in 1982, while Ershad was the chief martial law administrator, the organization's mission is to ensure the physical security of the President and his family. Because two of Ershad's predecessors were gunned down during army rebellions, Ershad was undoubtedly concerned over threats to his life.

Mission & Function

The force is charged with providing security for the President of Bangladesh, the Prime Minister of Bangladesh their immediate family members and any other V VIPs as per government decision.

Visiting foreign Heads of State, Heads of Government and dignitories also receive their protection.

The Commander of the President Guard Regiment is an army Major General known as the Military Secretary to the President which is the US equivalent of President's Chief of Staff. He reports directly to the president.[2]

The Commandant is usually a Brigadier General who is responsible for the day to day administration of the regiment.

The regiment is empowered with eight Platoons, each headed by either a Major or a Captain. The regiment's uniform slightly varies from rest of the Bangladesh Army and it's members are always authorized to carry firearms in uniform, even at peacetime.
